1.5 about gothic fashion itselfIt's about as impossible to define gothic fashion as it is to define gothic itself. For example, there are dozens of fashion descriptions within the original Goth Code, one of the most commonly recognized shorthands of gothic online. Is any one of those descriptions the sole idea of "Gothic Fashion"? Not bloody likely. They're all part and parcel of what goths around the world look like who still call themselves gothic (or call themselves "notagoth," even though they're obviously gothic!).
A few comments about Gothic Fashion,
gleaned from online:From Eileen: "Clothes are not 'goth'... it's how you wear them... how you put them together. I mean, the long black velveteen zip-up coat I just got looks goth on me... I paired it yesterday with a long black skirt and a joy division t-shirt... but my mother got the same one and wore it over a pair of blue jeans and a white t-shirt... So I guess what I'm trying to say is... the clothes don't make the wo/man... it's the other way around."
As Andrew Oakley writes in the UK Gothic FAQ: "Use your imagination, keep your eyes and mind open, and don't feel you need to shop at the Dark and Mournful Clothing Emporium just to 'get the look'."
