2.2 vintage clothing

From: Ice Princess
Here are the definitions I use:

Thrift -- This means "charity stores" such as Salvation Army, Goodwill, St. Vincent de Paul and such, plus Value Village (a Western U.S. chain). Generally the merchandise has been donated or bought in bulk from discounters. The basic guide, for me, in determining if it's a "thrift store" is "how much of the merchandise is under $10?" If it's more than half, it's a thrift store. Also, thrift stores generally carry a lot more than clothing.

Used Clothing -- This is places like Buffalo Exchange, Crossroads Trading Company, and here in Seattle, Red Light and Retro Viva. Generally these places only carry clothing and accessories, and while most of the clothing is used, it isn't necessarily inexpensive. Their merchandise comes from consignment, individual-item purchases from customers, or purchases from dealers (which often includes new stuff in addition to the used clothing). These places are also usually concerned with being "trendy," and therefore a lot of the merchandise reflects what was hip six months ago, not necessarily timeless or vintage looks.

Vintage -- These places specialize specifically in vintage clothing, often higher-quality, higher-cost stuff; their stock usually comes from consignment or purchases from vintage-clothing dealers. Places that call themselves "vintage" are, IME, almost always on the higher end in price, though there are exceptions. As I say on my web site, while you can often find vintage stuff at thrift stores, vintage stores are not necessarily thrifty.

Ice Princess comments:Strictly speaking, I don't *shop* here, because I can't afford anything (or fit into it). But I can't resist going in. This is true, pristine, top-of-the-line vintage, with lots of '40s and '50s designer stuff. I always want to cry when I go in--whether from joy or anguish, I'm never sure.

Trystan comments: The site is updated about once or twice a month, and the stock always has many beautiful garments from a variety of eras -- a lot of genuine 1800s pieces, often full outfits. The prices are high, but, then, the items are real antiques and in quite good condition for their age (they also offer a lay-away, so you can pay off a purchase over 30-60 days). As with most Victorian/Edwardian clothing, there's a short supply of larger sizes because big sizes got cut down and reused. If you have a 24" waist, you'll probably find a lot of stuff you can wear; but even if you're larger, do look through the site. I found a lovely circa 1900 outfit of a pleated skirt and pigeon-front bodice in black silk, with only minor damage, that perfectly fits my VoluptuGoth frame, for $65! The company was pleasant to deal with, and I received my purchase within four days of my check clearing. I'd do business with them again!
