3.4 how do I break in new boots?

From: Thorn
There are a number of things that you can do with boots to break them in, or at least ease the pain of the break-in:

  1. Saddle soap or Neat's foot oil will soak into the leather and soften it quite a bit. You just really have to take the time to work it in by hand.
  2. Go to the pharmacy and buy some moleskin and put it in the boot (soft side to your ankle) over the crease. This will help ease the effect of the rubbing and reduce the chance of big, nasty, painful blister-thingies.
  3. Walk in them for just a little while, but do so every day. That gives the boots a chance to break in, and you a chance to get used to them without major damage to your tootsies.
Lastly, when I was in the Army, we would soak new combat boots in water, lace them up tight, and wear them until they were dry. It makes them really supple and conform to your feet. You have to do it before you water-proof them, and it takes a lot of polish to get them looking strak again.

However, while it does work, I certainly would not recommend doing it with a $160 pair of Docs. Issue boots are much heavier leather and can take the abuse.
