6.6 how can I learn nail polish application tricks?

Some people complain about cheapie nail polishes chipping away and not lasting long (esp. brands like Wet 'n Wild). There's a real easy way to fix that -- use a strong, high-quality topcoat. You're still saving money by getting lots of different cheapie colors, while getting the strength of one bottle of topcoat. I use Sally Hansen's NoChip Topcoat over every polish, and I get about two weeks out of one polish 'do, even if the color was some no-name cheapo brand. And I'm *hard* on my hands too!

While you're all at Sally's, pick up some Formula 10 Topcoat, it costs about $5-6, and is a freaking godsend. My nails don't peel/chip nearly as much when I use that stuff... my nail polish only gets one or two tiny chips each day (as opposed to having half my nail polish peel off), and it's ultra-shiny. I cannot endorse this stuff again. Of course, it stinks a lot worse than most nail polishes, but it's *worth* it. Best stuff in the world!

I went out to get some Revlon Vixen polish, which is such a lovely blood-red. I also spotted some cheapo-but-good Brucchi polish in Silver Foil. Try this:Put on a few coats of the Vixen (or other suitably bloody shade). Then add a VERY thin coat of Silver Foil (or other silver polish), leaving some of the red edges showing through. You will look like you used your stainless steel nails to eviscerate something and didn't clean up well enough. As the silver wears down, the look gets more gruesome.

Find some deep purple nail polish, any brand (preferably glittery), make sure it's a bright color, not pastel, but very noticeable. Pile it on until you get a nice even coat of it, then put a very thin coating of the cheapy wet-n-wild black on it, and finish it off with a protective coating. Ends up looking better than Vixen (or a similar color), I've had people come up to me and ask me whose throat i ripped out recently. :) Also I kind of think that painting your nails really bright pink and streaking it with a good thick black nail polish looks really neat.

Here's an idea, that I recently discovered by accident. I painted my nails a black colour (cheap stuff) but then decided to be different. I took a nail polish that's clear with silver glitter in it and painted this over the black, and now my nails look like a starry night.

Try some sheer opal nail enamel, like Nina French Opal, over your black for something different. Try mixing black with silver polish -- just mix it a little bit, for kind of a marbly effect. (Actually, you can do this with any color.) Just pour a little out of each color onto a paper plate, dixie cup, or the like, and play around with it. Don't forget to clean your brushes.
